Study using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with UV detection with a DAD diode array. The furan compounds present in the sample are extracted from the oil matrix into a solvent. The extract is subjected to chromatographic analysis to identify and determine the concentration of furan compounds in the sample.
During the ageing processes of paper insulation, the cellulose chains are broken, resulting in the formation of furan derivative compounds. The consequence of a decrease in the degree of cellulose polymerisation is a deterioration in the mechanical strength of the paper insulation. Determining the content of furan compounds allows the degree of cellulose polymerisation to be estimated and the condition of the paper insulation to be assessed.
