Ecol tests: Grease Thief® – particle concentration in grease / particle characteristics in grease

  • • Standards: ASTM D7918-17a
  • • Amount of grease: 3 g
  • • Application: plastic lubricants
  • • Unit:
  • • Particle concentration in grease – mg/g
  • • Characteristics of particles in grease – %

  • method description:

The previously prepared sample in the consistency profile test on the GTA apparatus – the grease film on the substrate formed in matrix extrusion – is analysed using a vision system. Thanks to the advanced recording system and the computational algorithms developed, a classification of the degree of lubricant contamination is obtained by determining the concentration of particles (in mg/g in sizes ˃10 µm, ˃25 µm, ˃80µm) and the percentage characterisation of particles of size ˃25µm with a classification of their formation processes (e.g. abrasive wear, adhesive wear, fibres).

    interpretation of results:

The results of the study illustrate the weight distribution of particles in each distribution interval (˃10 µm, ˃25 µm, ˃80µm), and characterise particles with a size of ˃25 µm, i.e. at a detection level that cannot be determined in an elemental study by emission spectroscopy (RDE-OES). From the results, it is possible to infer the presence of external contaminants and the level of progression of wear processes, in the lubricated association, especially when observing the trend.
