Ecol research: Oil’s tendency to foam, foam persistence

Oil’s tendency to foam, foam persistence.

You will find a list of all tests performed at the Ecol diagnostic laboratory on this page.

  • Standards: PN-ISO 6247:2009, ASTM D892
  • Unit: ml /ml
  • Oil quantity: 400 ml
  • Application: Oleje turbinowe, hydrauliczne, obiegowe, silnikowe.
  • Scope of designation: 0-1000 ml/ml

  • Method description:

The test consists of aerating an oil sample and measuring the volume of foam immediately after aeration (propensity) and after a specified time (stability). The test is carried out in 3 temperature sequences.

    Interpretation of results:

Determination of foaming propensity makes it possible to assess whether oil under laboratory conditions has an excessive tendency to foam and foam persistence. With reference to the behaviour of the oil in the actual system, it can be determined whether foaming is a result of oil degradation (ageing, mixing) or whether there is a mechanical problem associated with false oil aeration. If the foaming tendency does not cause problems in the operation of the equipment (e.g. excessive / uncontrolled foam build-up in the reservoir, flowing out of the bearings, etc.) it can be considered harmless.
