Method description:
The alkali number is the number of milligrams (KOH) equivalent to all the alkaline components contained in 1 gram of oil. The test involves potentiometric titration.
Interpretation of results:
The test result indicates the oil’s alkaline reserve, which is necessary to neutralise the acidic products of fuel combustion. It defines the suitability of the oil for further use. The results should be related to the value of fresh oil and the requirements of the equipment manufacturer. Degradation of the additives is manifested by a reduction in the alkaline number.
