Drop of knowledge #17

Welcome to the seventeenth edition of the Ecol Laboratory newsletter

1. Classification of industrial oils: viscosity and quality standards as key to reliability

The correct selection of industrial oil is the foundation of reliable and efficient machine operation. The article provides a comprehensive overview of the classification of oils used in hydraulics, gears, turbines and compressors – taking into account two key technical parameters: viscosity and quality standards.

Understanding the classification of industrial oils makes it possible not only to select the right lubricant for a specific application, but also to reduce the risk of failure, reduce operating costs and extend the life of equipment – which translates directly into the efficiency and safety of industrial processes.

3. Element of the month

Molybdenum (Mo, Latin Molybdenum) is a chemical element in the transition metal group. The name comes from the Greek μόλυβδος molybdos ‘lead’, literally meaning ‘similar to lead’.
Molybdenum in its pure form is a silvery-white, extremely hard metal that has one of the highest melting points of all the elements. Even in small quantities, it significantly improves the properties of the steel – increasing its chemical resistance and hardness, while reducing brittleness.
Zastosowanie:

👉 More than 2/3 of molybdenum production is used as an additive in alloys (in combination with chromium it makes a lightweight and very strong material). Molybdenum is used in high-strength and high-temperature steels. Some alloys are particularly resistant to high temperatures and corrosion.

👉 Molybdenum is also used in the aerospace and defence industries, as well as in the manufacture of incandescent lamp components, as a tungsten filament support. Molybdenum complexes are used as a catalyst in the petroleum industry, particularly in the removal of sulphur from petroleum products.

👉 In a diagnostic analysis of the elements contained in oil, molybdenum is included in the category of additives as, among other things, a viscosity modifier and as a PD (plastic deformation) additive or EP (Extreame Pressure) anti-seize additive, however, as a component of alloy steels in correlation with metallic elements such as iron, chromium or nickel, it may indicate increased wear processes in the lubricated components of a particular piece of equipment.

👉 MoS2 (molybdenum disulphide) – is a solid additive (black powder) that improves lubricating properties mainly in gear oils intended for use in heavily loaded systems.
