Method description:
The method involves the determination of the residue, after coking, resulting from the evaporation and thermal decomposition of petroleum products.
Interpretation of results:
An increase in the coking residue indicates the presence of long-chain, insoluble ageing products in the oil with a tendency to coke. The higher the value, the more loaded the oil is with degradation products.
In the case of low ash compressor oils, the tendency to form deposits on the valves can be inferred from the test.
