Ecol tests: Water content met. Karl-Fischer

  • • Standards: PN-EN 60814:2002
  • • Unit: mg/kg
  • • Amount of oil: 5 g
  • • Application: electro-insulating liquids

  • method description:

Coulometric method based on the reaction of iodine with water present in the sample. The water content is proportional to the amount of iodine consumed during the titration reaction. At the equilibrium point, an excess of iodine appears causing a voltage drop. Based on the amount of current needed to generate iodine during the reaction, the water content of the sample is calculated.

    interpretation of results:

The water present in transformer oil lowers its breakdown voltage value, thus deteriorating its insulating properties. Water adversely affects the condition of the paper insulation by accelerating its degradation. The solubility of water in oil is temperature-dependent. At high temperatures the solubility of water in oil increases, while at low temperatures the insulation paper absorbs water from the oil.
