Defects that occur in the transformer (e.g. overheating or discharge) cause the chemical bonds between the atoms that make up the hydrocarbon molecules to break. Depending on the type of defect that occurs in the transformer, different gases are generated. Based on the type of gases present in an oil sample, their content and mutual ratios and increments, it is possible to diagnose the type of fault present in a transformer and its activity.
