The measurement indicates what maximum voltage the oil under test can withstand without a puncture occurring. The oil sample is placed in a vessel equipped with two electrodes to which an alternating voltage is applied, gradually increasing until a puncture occurs between the electrodes.
Clean and dry transformer oil (electrical insulating liquid) shows very good insulating properties characterised by a high breakdown voltage value. A low breakdown voltage value may indicate moisture in the sample, the presence of solid impurities or gas bubbles.
