Ecol has completed the filling of the transformers on the Baltica 2

Over a million kilograms of electrical insulating oil, 14 units serviced and four months of intensive work. Ecol has completed another strategic project for the Polish wind energy sector.

Ecol at Baltica 2

Our company has completed work relating to the supply, preparation and filling with oil of transformers and other electrical power equipment at the onshore station for the Baltica 2 project. This is yet another strategic investment in the offshore sector, in which Ecol was responsible for the comprehensive oil-related servicing of key high-voltage equipment.

The work lasted four months and covered the full range of services – from the supply of insulating oil, through the preparation of equipment for filling, to diagnostics and final quality control.

Scope of work carried out by Ecol

As part of the project, Ecol carried out the following:

  • supply of electrical insulating oil,
  • processing of the oil to achieve the rated parameters in external tanks,
  • vacuum testing of transformers,
  • filling of equipment with oil,
  • final treatment of oil in transformer tanks,
  • venting of systems,
  • sampling and oil quality testing.
  •
The scope of work covered 14 units: 4 275/400 kV transformers, 4 275 kV reactors, 2 400 kV reactors and 4 STATCOM transformers. In total, 1,020,000 kg of NYNAS LYRA X electrical insulating oil was supplied and injected, which was transported to the construction site by 41 road tankers.

During the project, specialist vacuum pumps were used, along with the Ekofluid FILOIL 12000 system, which enabled the effective preparation and treatment of electrical insulating oil both before and after the equipment was filled.

The work was carried out on transformers manufactured by GE Vernova. At every stage of the project, oil quality control was carried out. Breakdown voltage and water content tests were performed directly on site, whilst at the Ecol laboratory, additional analysis of dissolved gases in the oil (DGA), purity class testing and dielectric loss factor (Power Factor) testing were carried out.

Approximately 38 Ecol employees were responsible for the project, representing the service departments, the oil analysis laboratory, logistics, sales, administration and project management.

Baltica 2 – one of the largest energy projects in Poland

Baltica 2 is one of two offshore wind farms being developed jointly by PGE and Ørsted in the Baltic Sea. Once operational, the farm will have a capacity of approximately 1.5 GW, which will be enough to supply electricity to around 2.5 million households. The project is one of the cornerstones of Poland’s energy transition and will significantly increase the share of renewable energy sources in the national electricity system.

The completion of work on the Baltica 2 substation marks another offshore project successfully delivered by Ecol. The experience gained during the implementation of projects such as Baltic Power and Baltica 2 confirms our company’s expertise in providing comprehensive oil maintenance services for transformers and high-voltage equipment for the largest energy projects in Poland and worldwide.
