Method description:
The method consists of determining the colour of the oil with reference to an ASTM colour chart. The measurement is performed by a spectrophotometric instrument. ASTM scale from 0.5 (lightest) to 8.0 (darkest).
Interpretation of results:
The colour is not an indication for an oil change, but may in some cases be indicative of ageing processes progressing too quickly, localised overheating. The colour may also be falsely high due to turbidity of the sample caused, for example, by a high water content.
