Polish renewable energy sector, implemented by a&nbsp;consortium formed by the <b>ORLEN Group<\/b> and <b>Northland Power<\/b>.\r\n<br><br>\r\nThe project is to construct an <b>offshore wind farm<\/b> with a&nbsp;maximum output of 1.2 GW, approximately 23 km north of the towns of Choczewo and \u0141eba on the Polish Baltic coast. Ultimately, the wind farm is expected to <b>supply more than 1.5 million Polish households<\/b> with clean electrical power.\r\n<br><br>\r\nA total of <b>76 wind turbines<\/b>, each with a&nbsp;capacity of 15 MW, will be installed in an area of approximately 130 km\u00b2 slated for the wind farm. Wind turbines generate an output voltage lower than required for efficient long-distance transmission.<\/p>\n<p class=\"post__paragraph\">The electricity output first goes to an offshore substation, where transformers step up the voltage (usually to 220-275 kV) to minimise transmission losses. Parameters like oil quality, vacuum level, oil temperature, filling rate and ambient conditions must conform with the manufacturer\u2019s guidelines and prevailing technical standards. Vacuum system preparation<\/b> \u2013 setting up the valves, connecting the vacuum generating plumbing, and monitoring instruments.<\/li>\n<li class=\"post__list-item\"><b>3. Vacuum buildup<\/b> \u2013 the sufficient vacuum level is generated and held according to the specifications of the transformer. This step is done to make all water turn from liquid to gas and evacuate it from the power transformer.<\/li>\n<li class=\"post__list-item\"><b>4. Oil preparation<\/b> \u2013 the oil is purified and its water content removed prior to filling the transformer (these operations can be done by e.g. active thermal processing or vacuum processing), along with testing the key parameters of the oil (like breakdown voltage, water content, and acid number).<\/li>\n<li class=\"post__list-item\"><b>5. Installing the fittings<\/b> \u2013 the transformer is prepared for filling with oil by installing the required connections and safety equipment. Once the installation process is complete, the power transformer is isolated and passes a\u00a0pressure test to verify the pressure integrity of all connections prior to the next steps.<\/li>\n<li class=\"post__list-item\"><b>6. Dry air protection<\/b> \u2013 after the installation process and only if the pressure test is a\u00a0pass, the transformer interior is protected by pumping dry air (or nitrogen gas). This prevents condensation and protects the insulation materials from absorbing moisture. The air dehumidification system is an integral part of the equipment in the transformer service container, which also houses the dielectric oil.<\/li>\n<li class=\"post__list-item\"><b>7. Vacuum filling with oil<\/b> \u2013 this process is done at a\u00a0preset vacuum pressure to ensure the removal of all gasses from the transformer, minimising the risk of partial discharge. A key factor in accurately filling a\u00a0transformer with oil is the correct filling rate, which allows the internal materials (e.g. insulation paper) to fully and evenly absorb the oil.<\/li>\n<li class=\"post__list-item\"><b>8. Pressure equalisation with dry air or nitrogen gas and oil treatment<\/b> \u2013 once the transformer has been filled, the system is stabilised and additional filtration of the oil in the transformer tank is run to remove residual gases and impurities.<\/li>\n<li class=\"post__list-item\"><b>9. Sampling and quality control<\/b> \u2013 a\u00a0post-process oil analysis allows verification of its conformity to the specifications.<\/li>\n<li class=\"post__list-item\"><b>10. Our project task was the delivery and priming eight high-power transformers of the substation with dielectric oil. Each was filled with carefully prepared oil, which was delivered in tankers and processed before and during the filling operation. In total, we processed more than 766,000 litres of oil, maintaining full control over the quality of each charge, which was crucial for the subsequent safe commissioning of the transformers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"post__paragraph\">The process uses a\u00a0transformer oil treatment unit which removes water, gases and solids from mineral-based transformer oil, as well as natural or synthetic esters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"post__paragraph\">The process is crucial to ensure the safe and efficient operation of power transmission equipment. The unit\u2019s system uses vane and Roots pumps with coalescent filters to ensure high performance of dissolved gas and water separation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"post__paragraph\">Additional vacuum valves and thermal protection safeguard the unit and personnel, while automatic oil flow control allows the operating parameters to be precisely matched to operational conditions. In October 2025, the installation of two offshore electrical substations (OSS West and OSS East) was completed. These are key elements of the infrastructure, responsible for collecting energy from the turbines and transmitting it onshore. Partially manufactured in Polish shipyards, these structures highlight the growing involvement of domestic companies in the project\u2019s implementation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"post__paragraph\">In November 2025, the installation of turbines equipped with nacelles manufactured in Poland began\u2014produced at the Vestas factory in Szczecin. This marked a\u00a0symbolic moment for the development of local content, demonstrating the real involvement of the domestic industry in the offshore wind sector.<\/p>\n<p class=\"post__paragraph\">At the beginning of 2026, the project entered its most advanced offshore phase. In February, the installation of all 78 foundations (monopiles) was completed, representing one of the most demanding stages of the construction. Just a\u00a0month later, in March 2026, the installation of all transition pieces connecting the foundations with the turbines and offshore substations was finalized, thus completing a\u00a0key stage of the foundation works.<\/p>\n<p class=\"post__paragraph\">Currently, work is focused on the installation of wind turbines, as well as offshore and inter-array cables, alongside preparations for testing and commissioning of the wind farm. The completion of the installation campaign is planned for the second half of 2026, when Baltic Power is expected to begin energy production.<\/p>\n<p class=\"post__paragraph\">According to the current schedule, the construction of the Baltic Power offshore wind farm is set to be completed in the second half of 2026. During the same period, the project will enter the testing, certification, and gradual commissioning phase, leading to the start of commercial operations by the end of 2026.
